The summer months are coming to an end and the days will be getting shorter and cooler before you know it!

Many Heinen customers think that Spring is the only time for planting, but that isn’t the case. One of the best times to plant is during the Fall season! The plant experts at Heinen have put together a few tips and tricks to help you with your planting this Fall!

Everyone can agree that nothing compares to fresh, homegrown vegetable produce. One of the advantages to late-harvest planting is that maturing vegetables are more likely to have a better flavor because of the cool fall days, as opposed to the hot dry days of summer.

Late-harvest planting is effected by two factors.

  1. The frost/freeze tolerance of the plant
  2. The amount of time the plant takes to develop

Heinen IrrigationWhile it can be difficult to predict the exact date of the first frost here in Kansas City, we typically plan for the middle of October. Cool-season plants are best suited to the fall season and therefore often grow better in the fall than the spring. The longer, cooler fall season allows for full plant development, and if an edible plant, of the flavor. Some edible plants, like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, grow better when you transplant them. Root crops, including carrots, beets, and turnips, are perfect selections for the fall growing season.

Don’t be intimidated by fall planting and gardening! The fall season is actually an ideal time to plant. The key to successful fall planting is also timely watering, as the soil in Kansas City can often be very dry in the fall. An irrigation system is the best and most efficient way to keep your lawn and garden lush and beautiful!  No more dragging that heavy hose around all afternoon and evening.
